An Overview of Cerebral Palsy

When Your Child Has Celebral Palsy

By Kelly Burgess

Pages:  1  2  3  4

  • Ataxic cerebral palsy. This is the rarest form of CP, affecting 5 to 10 percent of all CP patients. It affects balance and depth perception.
  • Mixed forms. A combination of any of the above three types.
  • Diagnosing Cerebral Palsy
Sometimes cerebral palsy is obvious from the moment of birth because the level of involvement is so high. Other times, it may not be picked up for months or years.

Parents often say that they "had a feeling" something wasn't quite right with their child long before the diagnosis. Others have no clue. Marie Kennedy, author of My Perfect Son Has Cerebral Palsy (Authorhouse, 2001), had no idea that her son Jimmy was not hitting his developmental milestones until he was 10 months old. At that time, her parents pointed out that Jimmy should be sitting up and crawling. Even then, her pediatrician brushed aside her concerns.

On the other hand, Erin Brown Conroy, of Schoolcraft, Mich., a mother of 13 children by birth, marriage and adoption, knew when they put her son Joel into her arms that something wasn't right.

"Our son was adopted from Korea and came here when he was 8 months old," says Conroy. "We had quite a bit of good medical information on him before he even arrived; we knew, for example, that he had a cleft palate and we were prepared for that. But when they carried him off the plane and put him in my arms, I knew there was more going on. His muscle tone was poor and he moved oddly. Right then, a little bell went off in the back of my head."
