Khyraen's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

March 3, 2001

~~~~~~~~~~March 3, 2004~~~~~~~~~~
(actual date of entry above)
When I was typing up my last entry, I got to thinking about something that happened several years ago and involved a time when the fire department was actually called...
Jonnie was still in a car seat and Josh was still in public school. Josh's classroom was a bungalow right by where I parked my car so often I would leave Jonnie in his car seat for the two minutes or less it took to pick Josh up from his class. It had been cool enough to just leave the windows rolled down and lock the doors until that particular day.
On that day, the heat reached above 100*F. I think it was 104*F and I had a black car. I decided that, if I left the air and the radio on, Jonnie would be fine in the car for 2 min. When I got out of the car, out of habit, I locked the door. Of course, my keys were in the ignition.
When I got back w/ Josh I realized what I had done but I was not panicked. I knew the car was nice and cool and the tank was full of gas. I tried to get Jonnie to wiggle out of his car seat, he was 3 or 4 at the time, but it was to no avail. He didn't understand what I was asking him to do. I know this because I also knew that he COULD wiggle out of his car seat if he knew what I was trying to tell him. The fact that such a simple solution was just beyond my reach added to my frustration. I wasn't frustrated at him but just plain frustrated. After all, the 'parking lot' was just a sand covered lot and it was really hot OUTSIDE the car!
Finally, I gave up and went back to Josh's classroom to call my dh at work and ask him to come and bring the spare keys. In the meanwhile, I asked if there was anyone there who could pop a lock. Well, when the teacher's found out ds was locked in the car in this heat, they started to frantically try and rescue him. They must have waited something like 4 whole minutes before calling 911.
The firemen came all decked out in their fire gear. Maybe they had been at a fire and were on their way home. I don't know. But they looked HOT-really HOT. (No, not adorable, though several of them were that, too.) It must have been 120* in their outfits. Poor guys.
I'd like to say that they got him right out, but that would be a lie. They did work on two sides at once but they weren't very good at picking locks. Maybe it was the fact that the design of my car door is the absolute hardest of all designs short of ones w/ alarms or such to pick. It just won't be picked. (My poor rubber around my windows was never the same!)
When they finally opened the car, cool air came gushing out. While we had been out there sweating, Jonnie was sitting in comfort JUST LIKE I HAD SAID HE WAS. It was so nice and cool, w/ tunes on the radio, that the fireman just took a seat next to Jonnie and cooled off while talking to him. Jonnie wasn't even scared; just in awe over the firemen in their orange gear.
When it was all done, I think the firemen, if not the school teachers, could see why I wasn't worried. I had SUPER air conditioning in that car. It was as cool as by a cool pool in the shade w/ a nice breeze. I couldn't wait for the fireman to move back out so I could load up Josh and get in myself. I was patient though seeing as how they had to work at fixing my mistake in some VERY HOT conditions.
Anyway, the most frustrating thing about the whole incident was that Jonnie could--and had, while I was driving on occasion even--wiggle his way out of the car seat and open the door. However, he could not understand our gestures and he couldn't hear our instruction due to the radio, so--even though he could 'fix it' himself--we ended up w/ a 911. I'll be a lucky woman if that is the last time I ever need the fire department or emergency services.
Well, that's it for this time. Just some old memories to record (and share) for my poor memory's sake. Until next time...
Best wishes,
Khy and my two special boys
MORE ABOUT OUR FAMILY:
2 Yr Molars and Discovering Solids
The other day, Abby and I were 'talking' and she was 'sitting' on my chest. I grabbed a little finger food and went to pop it in my mouth and heard this slurping, sucking sound. I look up and there is Abby, staring at the food and smacking and sucking her lips. She really, really wanted to try it. When I put it up to her lips, however, she didn't know what to do and just kind of froze up. I'm so glad she's taking her time to grow up, especially since Zac 'grew up' so fast.
