The Call I Was Expecting 7/23/03

Teresa called me Friday afternoon to tell me that Beth had done her reassessment on Jarod. Overall, his speech is at one year and 11 months which is not enough to qualify him as 25% delayed. She said that Beth would see him one last time and that would be it. She also said Beth would send some notes home for us to use to try and help Jarod catch up the rest of the way. I don’t know what else we can do. We do try to clarify what he is saying by repeating what we think he’s said when his speech comes out unintelligibly. But I will look at everything that Beth sends us and do my best.

Teresa also mentioned during our conversation that I could take Jarod to the Preschool Special Ed program if he was still behind at age three. I shudder to think about dealing with those jackals again. Anyway, Beth suggested we get Jarod to slow down and annunciate his words a little better. I think they are all there but he talks so fast, it gets jumbled.

What Kind of Car is That?

Jaida’s latest hobby is naming cars. She knows Chevrolet, Toyota, Nissan, Lexus and Mazda by the symbols and/or names. Her least favorite is Dodge, go figure. She spends her time in the van with her head swiveled in a 180 while looking around her seat and out the back window. “There’s a Chevrolet behind us!” “There’s a Lexus like Grandma’s!” “Oooh, a Toyota!” The other night she told Mom, “I don’t like Dodge.” That was after a truck commercial for the offending auto maker went off. I don’t know what sparked this little fascination but it’s quite funny. Especially when she asks family members what kind of car they drive and she shows interest if it’s one of her favorites.

Jarod the Manipulator

Jarod is into stalling at bedtime now or anytime he doesn’t want to do something. When I leave the room to put Jaida in bed, he will call out after me, “Ont kiss, Mama!” Sometimes he asks for chips or water to prolong his bedtime routine. When Mom is leaving to go somewhere he will ask for a goodbye kiss, on both cheeks. She thinks it’s hilarious. After we get in the van in the mornings, he will ask her for a kiss as I’m backing out of the garage. Now they blow kisses to each other. But Jarod has also learned to try and sweet-talk people.

He burst into the bathroom the other day while I was using it. He stood in the doorway and said, “I yuv you!” I said, “I love you too, Jarod.” Then he grabbed my shirt and yanked it up, “Ont see owie?” (That’s his and Jaida’s word for private parts, in spite of me calling them by the proper names.) I stammered, “What?!” Steve came in and made him leave me in peace while we both tried to stifle our laughter. I have to admit it was funny even if it was inappropriate. In his two-year-old mind, he thought he could distract me with affection to get his way.

33 Weeks and Another OB Visit

I saw Dr. D again today and I also had another non-stress test. Lambchop was happy as could be and his heartbeat showed it. He did move around a lot and he kicked the monitor a few times. I guess he wanted to show his displeasure about the whole process. I did have one BH contraction and the toco level went up from 10 to 40. Dr. D saw it on the strip and asked if I had felt it. Nawww, I barely noticed. What do you think?! Of course, I felt it. He did say it was a pretty substantial one. He asked me to remind him if my labor had been spontaneous last time. I jogged his memory about me teetering on the edge of preeclampsia and the induction. He said that if my B/P held its course, I may not have an induction this time. WOOHOO!

Everything else with my appointment went fine and Dr. D was happy. I lost a pound and a half in spite of a healthy portion of chocolate cake every night since Saturday. Ahem… Hey, I’ve got to cut loose somehow. Normally, I control myself more but I’m getting to the ‘who cares’ part of pregnancy. You know, my hair looks a mess, who cares? I’ve been wearing the same three or four outfits every week for months, who cares? It’s a very enlightened state to be in. You non-preggos should try it. When Dr. D asked about my moods, I told him I was starting to get anxious but I thought that was pretty normal for any pregnant woman at this stage. It’s all hurry up and wait. But he said I was getting close so I should just try to hang in there.

Wal-mart Can Be Addictive

These last two weeks I’ve had about an hour to kill between my OB and chiropractor appointments. Today I went to the Wal-mart in the nice part of town to get Jaida’s school supplies. I knew it would be better stocked and less crowded. I got almost everything on the list in 10 minutes then I wandered around collecting everything else before stopping in the baby section. I can’t wait to find out what Jaida will need two audio cassettes for. I picked up some Parent’s Choice formula for supplementing if necessary and a travel size pack of baby toiletries for the diaper bag. I was flabbergasted to find Halo sleep sacks on sale for $14.73 so I bought two. The sizing seems liberal so I hope the smalls will still fit Lambchop when it gets cold.

I had to find something for Jaida’s last snack day on Friday before I got some other odds and ends. I am so ticked that I forgot to get my preferred brand of deodorant. The stinkiness I had in the second trimester has returned. I’ve been making do with another stronger brand but the smell is driving me nuts. I like the Almay gel deodorant in powder fresh. When I ran out last week, I got out my new tube only to discover I had bought the stick version by mistake. Well, it must not be the same formulation. I had enough gel for the right side but I used the stick on the left. That evening when I raised my arms to take off my shirt, WHEWW! I could have used my left armpit as a deadly weapon. As Jarod would say, “Ewwww, gross!” Well, I’ve sunken to the level of discussing my armpits again so I think it’s time to go.

This week, I have congratulations to send out to two diary writers. Allisun welcomed a baby girl and I can’t wait to hear the name she and Remo chose. I know everybody in iParenting land breathed a sigh of relief when the news that she was here safe and sound was posted on Allisun’s board by Barb. Also, Julia at BT announced her pregnancy in her latest entry. She and her Steve have been through so much, as Corinne put it once, “common decency” dictates that this pregnancy is nothing but text book. I sincerely hope that we are all breathing with relief in about nine months for you too, Julia.

Until next time,

Kim, Jaida, Jarod & Lambchop
