Jaida Loses Another Tooth and Gets a Mystery Virus 7/30/03
Last Thursday I went to pick Jaida up and Ms. Danielle was just leaving me a note on an envelope. Apparently, she noticed Jaida was holding something in her hand. When she asked what it was, Jaida smiled and she saw the bare spot where her other front tooth used to be. Ms. Danielle asked Jaida when it had come out and Jaida said at snack time. I assume she meant the snack time after her nap. I can’t see her holding that tooth in her hand all during the morning, during lunch, while she slept and then another snack session. Ms. Danielle just couldn’t believe that Jaida would hold the tooth and not tell anyone, especially since she’s so good at telling other people’s business.
On Friday night, Jaida seemed to be coming down with something. She had a slight fever and she picked at her dinner. On Saturday we went shopping and she ate hash browns from our favorite weekend breakfast haunt, Chick-Fil-A. When we got home, she went to the bathroom and came out complaining about her stomach. Two bathroom trips later, she had full-blown diarrhea. She skipped lunch and when she got up from her nap, she started vomiting. She begged Steve for fries at dinner time and he gave her a few. It’s not like this kid will eat a BRAT diet when she’s sick and fries are as bland as it gets for her. Sunday morning she woke up and came into the den with puke in her hair and on her beloved satin pillow case. I guess she got sick during the night and just rolled over and went back to sleep. Yuck!
Mom made her some gluten-free toast for breakfast on Sunday and that stayed down. I fell asleep in my room because lying down is the most comfortable position these days and Steve thought it was okay to let her have HOT DOGS for lunch. She wasn’t up from her nap 20 minutes and she was throwing up again. At least she was already outside and there was no mess to clean up. Mom hosed off the patio and I was beyond grateful. I think Jaida may have had hot dog overload. She’s been eating them for lunch or dinner or both for nearly two months straight. I know that is not the healthiest food in the world but we have to go with the flow around here. Before that she was throwing her lunch away or simply not eating it and that was causing more problems.
Jaida was still throwing up Monday morning when she got up, probably because she had eaten more fries the night before, so we let her stay home. Mom made her some gluten-free pancakes and they stayed down and so did the rest of her meals for the day so she was fine Tuesday. I sent spaghetti for lunch Tuesday and she ate most of it so I think she’s on the mend. Now I just have to figure out what to feed her every night.
“I DO IT!”
That seems to be all we hear from Jarod from lately. If I try to pull a shirt over his head, “No, I do it!” If I try to put his diaper on after a bath, “No, I do it!” I want to foster his independence but he’s driving me nuts. I must say I am proud of him though. He can put on his own shirt and shorts with minimal assistance from me. He even tried to zip his shorts the other day. He almost had the zipper too, it was very cute. This latest development has made him into quite the little helper so I’m milking that for all it’s worth. “Hey Jarod, you wanna turn on the TV?” His eyes light up and he’s off in a flash, “Yeah, I do it!” I wonder how long this phase will last.
He also wants to help Mom wash dishes or cook and that has caused some tantrums when we tell him no. She does let him do simple things like stir batter or rinse off plastic cups. As long we try to include him in the process, he is overjoyed. I’ve taken this opportunity to teach him to clean up after himself too. He likes to put his own clothes in the hamper and the diapers in the Diaper Genie. But you have to make sure you watch him. Mom forgot to check the hamper’s contents last week and a diaper got washed with the clothes. What a mess! There were little white pills on everything and the lint trap was bulging. You should have seen her face when she pulled out the shell of the disposable diaper while she was folding the clothes, LOL.
34 Weeks: How Many Chiropractors Does it Take to Turn a Breech Baby?
On Monday, I got a strange feeling around lunchtime. I couldn’t pinpoint a particular symptom but I just didn’t feel well. Monday night I had some pelvic pressure and my lower back felt heavy. I went to bed and woke up feeling horrible. I had some intestinal cramps that were pretty intense but nothing happened when I tried to use the bathroom. I was really tired and wishing for this last week of work to go quickly. I dragged myself to work and then the feeling started to come back around 10:00. I was sweaty and feeling nauseous like my blood sugar was too low. I ate a snack and downed a whole glass of water but still no change. Then the abdominal cramps started and my lower back still felt funny. I hemmed and hawed and decided to call the doctor after I consulted the ladies at the diary writers group.
I called at 11:30 but I’m pretty sure Dr. D works in a neighboring town on Tuesdays so I thought it might take a while. I managed to force down some lunch (a market fresh five-star club from Arby’s, LOVE those!) and waited for a call from somebody at the OB’s office. I was beginning to feel a little better but I was still sweaty and uncomfortable. Finally, I called and gave them my home number before I left work. They called at 5:00 and the nurse seemed very young. She asked if I had any bleeding (no) or if the crampiness was coming in waves (no). She suggested I get plenty of rest and fluids and call the emergency after-hours number if anything got worse. She asked if this was my first baby. HAHA! She asked if I remembered what contractions felt like. Are you freakin’ nuts? But I told her I had been induced so I had no idea what early labor felt like. Pitocin always brings my labor on relentlessly hard and heavy.
She told me to just watch for any change and if I was still having cramping Wednesday morning I could come in early before my appointment and have an ultrasound. Shortly after that phone call ended, the potty trips started. I got really nauseous again and going #2 didn’t help. I made a mental note to ask Dr. D to do a fetal fibronectin (sp?) test since I would be swabbed for group B strep anyway. It couldn’t hurt right? That and the non-stress test will answer any questions. The one reassuring thing is that Lambchop was moving normally during all this. He was practically wired all day Monday. I hope for all the rocking and rolling, he’s managed to get his little butt in the right position for birth!
I had more potty trips this morning, twice before I could even leave the house. I was brushing my teeth and a cramp so fierce it made my eyes and mouth water overpowered me. I convinced it was a virus from that point. I drank water and juice all morning and set off for my appointment at lunchtime. Lambchop was doing some type of aerobics in there and I almost fell off the table trying to help Shelly pick up his heartbeat. I kept hearing his little feet (I know that’s what that was) swish/bubble past the monitor. Half the time, it was my pulse on the monitor because he was moving so much. Dr. D came in and I told him about the virus. He looked at the strip and scratched his head. He chased Lambchop down with the monitor and held it long enough to get a good reading, about a minute.
He instructed me to drink plenty of fluids, a little Gatorade and eat bananas to keep my potassium and electrolyte levels up. He said I could have some Immodium if I was still having trouble tomorrow. If this hasn’t resolved by Friday, I may have to go in for IV fluids to help it along. I don’t think that will be necessary. I’m feeling a little better and getting adjusted seemed to help too. I mentioned to Heather at the Chiro clinic that I was trying to find someone in our area to do the Webster technique on me. It is a soft tissue technique that chiropractors can do to make a breech baby turn. Heather bounced off to ask Dr. Tom if he had ever heard of it and I waited for my teeth to stop rattling from the Shiatsu thing they use to loosen up the back muscles before an adjustment.
So, I’m laying there, face down with my belly hanging through a hole in the table when I hear Heather come back. She says, “He knows that technique, Kim.” I feel my heart give a little leap. Oh, say it ain’t so! Dr. Tom starts to work on me as he talks, “I used to hang out with Dr. Webster! We were good friends until he died a few years ago.” I couldn’t believe it, right under my nose, a skilled Webster student all this time. He raised and lowered my legs twice and then adjusted my tailbone area, whew did I need that! He had me turn over on my back and he found the top of my hip bone on the right. He pressed in with his thumb and forefinger until he felt something shift. “There we go,” he muttered. Then he went to my left side and repeated the same little pinch thing while feeling for the top of my uterus. Then he came back to my right side and repeated the pinch thing while he pressed down on my shoulder at the same time. Lambchop started going nuts.
Dr. Tom chuckled and said, “Look at him go.” Lambchop really seemed to be annoyed by this technique. I swear I felt him shift to my left. Dr. Tom raised the table and I felt really good. All the way home I felt Lambchop tumbling and stretching. The research I’ve seen says it takes at least 24-48 hours for the baby to turn. It might only take one Webster adjustment or it might take several. Dr. Tom said we can keep trying for these last five weeks or so. Gosh, is that all I have left? I don’t have another ultrasound until for two more weeks so I hope I can tell when he turns. Although, I have a feeling I will be able to tell if he does. I’ve seen some alien-like movements more than once tonight already.
Well, I need to go whip up my mashed potatoes. I don’t think I can stomach much else. It’s so nice to see all the new diaries! I’ll never be able to read them all though. Sigh… I’m the only one that upates once a millennium on this site now. Ah well, nothing like being a big fish in a small pond, LOL. Oh, I have to say THANK YOU to my good friend Steph from Moms Today. When I lamented the lack of an infant car seat some months back, she offered to GIVE me hers. Mom and my brother kept asking, “She didn’t want you to pay her for those things?” I just smiled and said, “Nope, wouldn’t even let me pay for the shipping.” She also sent me some of the cutest boy outfits that will be perfect for Lambchop when it gets cold as well as a long-sleeved maternity top that fits me perfectly. I’m sure I’ll spend many Saturday afternoons lounging in it this winter cause I'll still be nice and round in front. :o) Nothing like having friends with big hearts! Thanks again, Steph! I owe you one!
Until next week,
Kim, Jaida, Jarod & Lambchop
