Expert Q&A

By Tracy Underwood
Child and Adolescent Psychologist Children's Medical Center of Dallas

I am 32 and just found out i am expecting my second child. I'm very happy but am concerned, but not overly, about my weight. I have seen others who are heavier and thinner than I am have good and bad pregnancies. My son is a year old, and I dont have a lot of time for excercising and sometimes that can be a pain. Do you have any suggestions?

Since you already have a child and your time is probably limited, then walk, walk, walk! Put the baby in the stroller and just go for it. Afterwards, especially if the baby has been put to sleep by the walk, you can do some lower back exercises and stretches that I have given detailed instruction on in some of the back issues of Pregnancy Today. You can request those on line. Until you get those back issues, just start walking and burning some calories. Just be careful not to "diet". This is not a time to go into calorie deficit, but burning some extra calories will help you to gain less excess fat weight."
