Expert Q&A

By Dr. Bunni Tobias

Psychologist

I was told there is a relationship between ADHD, enlarged adenoids and enuresis. Can you confirm this?

I'm not an M.D., but let's think about this. Enlarged adenoids are often caused by multiple sinus and ear infections, so the first question would be: Does your child have allergies, like to milk products, as an example, which often cause excessive congestion? This is a great question for an allergist or knowledgeable pediatrician. Allergies can also cause spastic bladder symptoms. Just a guess, of course. I don't worry about enuresis until children are around 10 or 11 years old. Some kids are just sound sleepers. Allergies can definitely cause ADHD-type symptoms, as can hearing obstructions. ADHD is a sign that something is amiss. Your first step is to find out the "what." An ear, nose and throat physician might want to remove his adenoids and investigate why they are there in the first place. Please don't jump to a label. Go for the root cause. I hope this is helpful."
