Expert Q&A

By Jenny Lewis, M.D.
Pediatrician

I am looking for some advice on how to assist my son (2 years, 9 months and one of triplets) establish a more regular sleep pattern. He has been diagnosed with autism, and I am wondering about using melatonin. Any thoughts or ideas?

Melatonin has been found useful in some children with autism, and it may be worth a try. Be aware that it is not really known what dose a young child should take nor are there any standards for formulating melatonin. I would certainly check with your pediatrician before you do this.
