Expert Q&A

By Mindy Hudon
Speech and Language Pathologist

My 3-year-old son only says a few words. He tries to talk but only makes sounds. In addition to his speech problems, he sometimes will hit himself in the head. What should we do?

A 3-year-old child is usually a very good communicator. He should be able to talk in sentences to ask questions, make his needs known and comment about activities, toys, movies, etc. Through your description, it seems that your son is having trouble communicating with you. Also, head hitting could be a sign of his frustration with his difficulty talking, or it could be something else. I suggest you talk to your pediatrician about your concerns and then have your son evaluated. A speech and language evaluation will be able to determine if an impairment exists and will provide you with the guidance to help your son communicate better."
